Vardaman's Reaction

By: William Faulkner

Journal Entry #1 - Visual Depiction

Vardaman - pg. 53-57

In this section, Vardaman realizes that his mother is dead, and he blames Peabody for it. Vardaman is extremely upset about his mother, which is shown when he says that he is crying, and that he is "vomiting the crying".

Journal Entry #2 - Diary (Jewel's Perspective)

Darl - pg. 94-95

Diary,
Darl. It's like he hates Ma. He just can't wait for her to die, can he? He's still trying to convince me that she's dead, but she can't be... The buzzards mean nothing; she is still alive. And the way Darl is saying it. He doesn't love Ma. He doesn't care. Goddamn him. Goddamn him... I wish he were lying down, sick. Dying like her. I would let him know that I have no brother. *He* was, and is no more. Or whatever the hell he said. I just hope we get home in time...

Moseley - pg. 198-205

Heard a few rumors about that family that passed yesterday. Bundren's their name, I think. They're an interesting lot. That girl that came by; what was her name? Doo-dle, or somethin'. Well, she's with those people. Yep, an interesting lot, indeed. Just passin' through town with a week-old carcass in the wagon, a little pregnant girl, and a boy fixin' his leg with wet cement. Heh, I reckon they're almost at Jefferson by now. Good luck to 'em for the rest of their trip; they're sure gonna need it.

Haha, perfect!!! Those idiots are like chickens without heads! I know they are finally suffering for what they caused me! I actually drove Darl insane!!! He's at the loony-hut talkin' to himself! He really lit that barn on fire. I was starting to think that he was the smart one, but look what happened! And Dewey Dell isn't even worth my breath, that stupid little girl. Of course having another go with a guy won't get rid of any baby. Oh, Cash... I never had much of a problem with Cash, but this is just too funny to let pass. Those imbeciles actually poured wet cement over his leg to make it feel better!!! I can't believe these people. I bet he's gonna get that leg removed by next month. And then there's Anse, who just found a new "Mrs. Bundren". Well, her life's now Hell. Like mine. Those children at that school did a number on me, but to be married to Anse was worse than death itself. He only saw me as a worker and a baby-maker. Well, now he went to Jefferson to get those durn false teeth, and just watching him go was enough to poop myself (no pun intended)! My plan worked out to perfection!!!

Jewel

This is Jewel when he finds out that Anse sold his horse. He is hiding his sadness, and he rides off without telling anyone anything. He does let the farmer take his horse.

Peabody - pg. (fixing Cash's leg)

Simply unbelievable. How could that old man be so selfish? He would rather dump wet cement over his son's leg than pay to see a doctor. He just needed those teeth so bad. Well, now his son's gonna have to pay for it. This won't be easy for Cash at all, and I hate to do it to him. His leg is already broken, and now I'm gonna have to remove almost all of the skin to get this cement off. With all the pain Cash is feeling, I'm surprised he isn't even complaining. I know I would be crying for mercy if my broken leg was being torn apart by dry cement.
